Over the last decade, the big screen, to put it mildly, has been flooded with all kinds of superheroes, whether those using magic wands or wearing Marvel-style capes. Recently, however, this trend is increasingly making its way to the small screen, especially with the large-scale intention of Disney to expand the Marvel universe with a bunch of new series. But as already mentioned, not all superheroes wear capes, some also wear се corsets. That’s right, the upcoming fantasy series of The Nevers will follow the plight of several ladies in Victorian London with unimaginable abilities. In general, we can say that it resembles a hybrid between X-Men and Penny Dreadful.

The story takes us back to 1896 when a mysterious event endowed certain residents of London (most of them women) with supernatural abilities. Citizens are quickly divided into “touched” and ordinary. In the midst of the events, two women find themselves – a widow and a young inventor, who will do everything in their power to protect the gifted and to prove that harmony can be achieved between the two sides of society. The first season will be non-standardly divided into two parts, each will contain six episodes. At this time, however, there is no information about the premiere of the second part.

It is quite clear that HBO is in desperate search of their new “gold mine”. The end of Game of Thrones marked the end of an era in which they were for years leading among streaming platforms precisely because of the worldwide success of the series. But no happiness lasts forever and at the moment HBO is quickly overtaken by the competition. We don’t know if The Nevers will turn out to be what they hope it will be, but it certainly has the potential to be really interesting. At first glance, the idea for the series seems somewhat chaotic, a combination of many other productions that individually work perfectly, but together can be disastrous. Fortunately, the trailer proved the opposite, hinting not only at promising action scenes but also intriguing characters and a deep storyline. However, only time will tell whether The Nevers will reach the heights of previous cult HBO productions.

And here is the official synopsis:

In the last years of Queen Victoria’s reign, London has been obsessed with the “touched”: people (mostly women) who suddenly show superhuman abilities – some charming, others very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, skillful widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new subclass, creating a home for the touched, while in the meantime fighting with the forces of… e, with almost all the forces.

The series is based on the idea of Joss Whedon. The fact that he is also behind the fantasy TV hit from the 90’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer gives us hope that The Nevers fully deserves our attention. In fact, Weeden himself left the project in November and his role as showrunner was taken over by Philippa Goslett, but his name still appears as executive producer.

The premiere of The Nevers is on April 12 on HBO.
