“I worked for a long time at the Sofia City Gallery before applying for the post of director and I always wanted our galleries to be on the level of the European ones and to have all the opportunities for development in every direction – research and publications,” said Adelina Fileva, director of the Sofia City Art Gallery.
According to her, the 27 galleries in the country are understaffed.
“In some places, there were art galleries with three full-time jobs – one director and two employees, I don’t know if it was for survival or extinction.”
Some galleries lack restorers, art critics. The policy of purchase of works should be a process, stressed Adelina Fileva:
“Professionals need to know what they have, what they lack and what they are looking for. This means going to the studios, to exhibitions, to study, to have contacts with heirs with other specialists, with artists and to make a selection – every year to decide what and how much. It is not necessary to enter huge amounts of works in the museum with a lot of money, it is important that they enter regularly. Every year to enter works to replenish the various funds of museums. It’s a process and it has to be done all the time. “
