The Bulgarian Rave Archive (BRA) project presents a multi-genre exhibition dedicated to the birth of the electronic music scene in Bulgaria in the late 1990s. Through various modern and digital techniques, the exhibition brings together archival materials from the revolutionary rave movement in our country and its influence on urban culture.
The retrospective exhibition “BRA | Bulgarian Rave Archive” opens on September 22 at 19.00 in the National Student House and is open to visitors until September 29. The curator is the visual artist Vladislav Iliev – Vladzen.
The end of the 90s and the beginning of the new century mark a unique moment in our recent cultural history. Following the example of Berlin, London and New York, thousands of young people in our country are becoming part of the birth of the electronic scene, popular as a rave. A culture that is distinguished by its innovative sound, bright visions and a new type of artists – electronic producers, DJs.
In the current contemporary reality of lockdowns, when we nostalgically remember the opportunities to gather freely and experience music indefinitely, the digital imprint of the cultural experience has more and more weight. In this context, the Bulgarian Rave Archive project aims to bring life – by digitizing, processing and displaying this content in a new way.
The archive in the multimedia exhibition includes over 1300 minutes of archival videos, over 100 original posters and flyers from parties, parts of 5 radio shows, interviews with nearly 20 producers, DJs, organizers, face controls, fans.
The project will be presented in two exhibition spaces at the National Student House. Two video installations through video mapping technology will introduce visitors to archival video materials, interviews and photographs. The exhibition also includes an installation with posters, a selection of flyers from the period 1999 – 2003 and a book (zine) with illustrations, photographs and graphics.
The archival materials, part of the multimedia exhibition, will also be presented in digital episodes on the website www.ravearchive.space, as well as in the BRA channels on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook from October 1 to the end of the year.
