Natalie Portman will star in an HBO production based on Elena Ferrante’s novel Days of Abandonment.
The Oscar winner will play the role of Tess.
Her heroine falls into a crisis when she is abandoned by her husband after giving up her dream of a stable life.
Portman hinted at the project with Instagram posts last fall. In September, she wrote about Ferrante’s Neapolitan series and described the novels as books you don’t want to finish, “because you feel so connected to the images and their experiences.”
Maggie Bates is the author of the adapted script, director and one of the producers of the film.
Ferrante’s novels have gained the attention of television and film production companies lately. Netflix is working on a series on her novel The Deceitful Life of Adults. Maggie Gyllenhaal directed Olivia Coleman in an adaptation of The Lost Daughter.
