Block Cinema is an independent project of the Association for Cultural Initiatives AC, which started in the summer of 2015 with open screenings of new Bulgarian films in the open in the inter-block spaces.
“Block Cinema” is part of the Calendar of Cultural Events of Sofia Municipality.
Block Kino returns from August 23 to 27 in Sofia’s neighborhoods with a selection of new Bulgarian films. The screenings traditionally have free entrance, and cinemas are the park spaces and schoolyards of the capital. With a small but strong film program, this year’s Block Cinema focuses on rediscovering the urban environment that surrounds us on a daily basis in its historical, architectural and cultural diversity. With the help of artists from various fields, “Block Cinema” will “walk” around “Knyazhevo”, “Geo Milev” and “Mladost” to tell us their hidden stories about movies, people and neighborhoods.
On August 23, Friday from 20:45. “Block Cinema” is a guest for the 6th year of the “Knyazhevo” district, in the yard of the 26th “Yordan Yovkov” High School with the black comedy of the directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov – “The Father”. The film won the Crystal Globe Grand Prix at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, was screened at festivals around the world – Toronto, London, Goa, Valladolid, Trieste and was the Bulgarian Oscar nomination in 2020.
On August 25, Wednesday again from 20:45. Block Kino will set up a screen on the green meadows of Geo Milev Park in the neighborhood of the same name with a screening of one of the most successful contemporary Bulgarian films of the last few years – Milko Lazarov’s Aga. from the most prestigious European festivals – Berlinale and won the grand prize at the festival in Sarajevo, the magnificent cinematic story of the Siberian deer hunter Nanuk, his wife Sedna and their daughter Aga, rises again on the screen of Blok Kino for a wonderful summer evening under the stars.
On August 27, Friday from 20:45. in the park of “Mladost 3” residents and guests of the neighborhood will watch the documentary film by director Andrey Paunov about one of the most famous contemporary artists, born in Bulgaria – Christo and his work on the impressive project “Floating Quays”.
Stories about people, neighborhoods and movies
Blok Kino will present the neighborhoods and films where the screenings of the program are hosted in a new way – together with young journalists, film critics and photographers. Part of the long-term vision of the project is the creation of permanent connections between the new Bulgarian cinema, its themes, its potential audience and the shared environment they inhabit.
